Is it just me, or is it pretty much impossible to read about celebrity diets lately without seeing at least a mention of the keto diet?
Jenna Jameson recently announced on Instagram that she lost a ton of weight on keto (57 pounds!), and Mama June, Halle Berry, and Kourtney Kardashian have all sworn by the diet at one point or another.
I am sure you have heard of the Keto diet before, but I get how hard it can be to follow the ton of information online.
The Ketogenic diet is all about minimizing your carbs and upping your fats to get your body to use of fat as a form of energy, says Scott Keatley, RD.
Typically translates to 60-75% of your calories from fat, 15 – 30% of your calories from protein, and 5-10% of your calories from carbs.
After about two to seven days of following this eating routine, you go into something called ketosis, or the state your body enters when it doesn’t have enough carbs for your cells to use for energy.
Your brain starts to produce keto cells and the cells would flow in your bloodstream and urine.
As your body needs a lot of fats in order to function, you will lose weight. Simply math.
WHY DID THE KETO DIET BECOME SO TRENDY FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
Believe it or not, keto was designed to help people who suffer from seizure disorders—not to help people lose weight, says New York-based R.D. Jessica Cording. That’s because both ketones and another chemical produced by the diet, called decanoic acid, may help minimize seizures and even a treatment on his own to epilepsy.
But people who started following the keto diet noticed weight loss for a few reasons: When you eat carbs, your body retains fluid in order to store carbs for energy (you know, in case it needs it).
But when you’re not having much in the carb department, you lose this water weight, says Warren. Also, it’s easy to go overboard on carbohydrates—but if you’re loading up on fat, it may help curb cravings since it keeps you satisfied.
WILL THE KETO DIET ACTUALLY HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?
Without a doubt.
people usually reduce their daily caloric intake to about 1,500 calories a day because healthy fats and lean proteins make you feel much fuller sooner—and for a longer period of time. And then there’s the fact that it takes more energy to process and burn fat and protein than carbs, so you’re burning more calories than you did before. Moreover, you don’t consume carbs: sodas, chocolates, snacks, gluten and so much more, you eat very healthy and when you are hungry. Over time, this will lead to weight loss.
What celebrities say about the Keto diet?
“For years, I have been following the keto or ketogenic diet,” Halle writes on Insta, talking about the importance of nutrition in managing her diabetes. (A little-known fact about the Oscar-winning actress: She’s had type 2 diabetes since she was 19 years old.)
Research shows that a very low-carb diet can help people manage type 2 diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels.
Halle emphasizes that, to her, keto isn’t a “diet” per se: “I hate the word ‘diet’ so while you’ll see the word diet, just know I encourage you to think of it as a lifestyle change.” She also credits the keto diet as “largely responsible for slowing down my aging process,” and helping her lose her “baby belly,” control her appetite and boost her energy and mental performance. The 51-year-old mother also says it’s helped improve her physical endurance and skin.
The actress credits a strict, low-carb diet (along with long walks) for helping her stay svelte after three kids. “I cut out all bread and those sort of carbohydrates,” she tells E! Online. “No crackers, no pretzels, no chips.”
“I don’t have any cheat days,” she says. “It’s like giving up smoking. I gave up smoking cold turkey.I’m one of those people when I’m committed, there’s no stopping me. So, I did it and after about a week, it repulses me. Like, there’s bread over there and never again would I put that in my body.”
Kourtney writes about her low-carb “detox” plan. A typical day features a green smoothie with avocado for breakfast, then lean proteins and veggies (such as greens, cauliflower rice, or broccoli) for lunch and dinner.
Although she doesn’t explicitly state she’s on the keto diet, her gluten-free, sugar-free style of eating definitely qualifies. She even explains that this plan helps her keep her “body in a state of ketosis, which occurs when the glycogen in your liver is depleted and the body burns fatty acids for energy.” Yep, that’s keto, alright.
If you’re interested in the following keto for a short period of time, Cording says it’s important to set yourself up for success by making sure you have the right ingredients and tools to make it happen.
